BELLAIRE - The Jefferson-Belmont Regional Solid Waste Authority met Monday at the Bellaire Public Library announcing the dates for this year's e-cycling collections.

The E-cycling events will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 21 at the Fort Steuben Mall and Aug. 28 at the Ohio Valley Mall.

According to Jack Cera, executive director of the solid waste authority, it is the third year in a row the e-cycling collection will be held at the local malls.

"This is an chance for the residents of both Jefferson and Belmont counties to get rid of their old electronic items without sending more of these hazardous materials to our local landfills," said Cera. "Many electronic items contain copper, lead and other hazardous materials which can add to pollutants in a landfill."

According to Cera, the list of acceptable materials that can be dropped off for e-cycling include hard drives, mainframe servers, keyboards, cell phones, telephones, power cords, fax machines, printers, CDs, floppy discs, UPS batteries, car batteries and cell phone batteries.

"All of the electronic items will be refurbished or recycled. All computer hard drives will be thoroughly destroyed to remove any confidential information," Cera added.

Also announced was the date for this year's Household Hazardous Waste Collection. This year's event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 11 at the Fort Steuben Mall in Steubenville.

"Last year the event was held in Belmont County, so this year it will be in Jefferson County," explained Cera. "It trades off each year so residents of both counties can have easy access on alternate years."

Acceptable materials include household cleaners such as ammonia, bleach and cleaners used for carpets, drains, toilets, furniture and other household applications; lawn and garden chemicals, pesticides and herbicides, lab packs (acids/bases), various pool chemicals and aerosols; antifreeze, motor oil, oil filters, gasoline or kerosene; paint and paint products such as thinner, primer, stain, sealer, varnish and shellac, solvents, strippers, turpentine, roof and driveway sealer; light bulbs with mercury; various batteries; and propane cylinders of grill size and smaller.

Materials that will not be accepted are PCB's, transformers, capacitors, explosives or ammunition, medical or infectious wastes, radioactive waste, commercial or business waste and compressed gas cylinders (except propane).

"All of these collections are for the residents of Jefferson and Belmont counties only and photo identification with address may be required to drop off your materials," Cera reminded.
