STEUBENVILLE - The pile of used tires appeared in the alley overnight.
First Ward Councilman Gerald DiLoreto is hoping they disappear just as fast.
Starting today the Jefferson-Belmont Regional Solid Waste Authority and the city will co-sponsor a tire collection campaign through Friday.
"The city will be accepting car tires, with or without their rims. We will also be accepting small truck tires with or without their rims," explained DiLoreto.
He has been a driving force in recent years in efforts to collect and properly dispose of used tires.
"We have four drop-off sites in the city, including the corner of Wilson and Lincoln avenues. Additional drop-off sites are at an empty lot at the State Street and Union Avenue intersection on Pleasant Heights, in the LaBelle neighborhood at the water tower near the intersection of Maryland Avenue and Pittsburgh Street and at Fifth Street and Franklin Avenue in the city's North End," said DiLoreto.
"Last year we collected 600 tires. That was down from the year before when we collected 1,000," said DiLoreto.
"Other communities in Jefferson County are working with the solid waste authority to collect used tires, so hopefully we will see our numbers go down in the city every year," DiLoreto noted.
Louise Holliday, education coordinator of the Keep Jefferson County Beautiful Office, said 25,000 tires were collected last year in the county during collection campaigns.
"All of the tires collected during these campaigns are taken to Liberty Tire in Minerva where they are shredded and recycled for a variety of purposes," said Holliday.
