The Jefferson/Belmont Regional Solid Waste Authority will observe America Recycles Day with a number of special events in Belmont and Jefferson Counties.
According to a press release, the EPA said that each year Americans generate more than 217 million tons of municipal solid waste, more than 4.5 pounds per person per day. To encourage the nation’s attention on the importance of recycling and closing the loop, businesses, industries, government agencies, nonprofit organizations and individuals join to celebrate America Recycles Day 2009.
The Jefferson-Belmont Regional Solid Waste Authority is celebrating America Recycles Day with a number of special events in both Belmont and Jefferson counties.
Keep Belmont County Beautiful (KBCB) will host a homemade paper recycling workshop at the St. Clairsville office on Saturday November 7th from 1:00 – 3:00 pm. The public is invited to learn how paper is recycled and given a chance to make their own homemade paper greeting cards for the holidays. The workshop is free and open to the public. The office is located in the Riesbecks Shopping Plaza in St. Clairsville.
On Saturday November 14th KBCB will host a “Rubbish Review” fashion show in the promotional court at the Ohio Valley Mall. It is open to all ages, kindergarten to high school and college students to senior citizens. Participants will have the opportunity to show off their creativity by designing fashions or accessories made with recyclable materials and reusable trash. The Rubbish Review will allow residents to see in a new light the trash they throw away.
Also on Saturday November 14th, KBCB will hold a special paper recycling collection event at the Ohio Valley Mall from 9am to 5 pm. Residents are encouraged to bring all types of paper and cardboard to the event where workers will load the materials into a trailer. One half of the paper recycling proceeds from the special collection and the paper recycling from the community drop-off barns November 9th -14th will be donated to Belmont County food pantries. “This is an excellent opportunity to start recycling if you are not yet doing so,” said Tammy Shepherd Program Director at KBCB. “Please remember that the special collection will be for mixed paper only and no metal, glass or plastic will be accepted.
A drawing for earth day tee shirts and reusable shopping bags will be held for participants bringing paper to the collection. For information about Belmont County events please call (740) 296-5376.
Keep Jefferson County Beautiful is sponsoring a recycling coloring page contest for K-2 grades. Entries will be displayed at the Fort Steuben Mall. A recycling tuck will be located at the Fort Steuben Mall November 9-14. The truck will be unmanned until the 14th when a drawing for prizes will be held for participants bringing paper to the collection.

From October 19th to November 21st the Association of Ohio Recyclers and the US Environmental Protection Agency are sponsoring the Ohio School Recycling Challenge to Ohio schools. Four Belmont County schools have answered the challenge - Barnesville Elementary, St. Mary’s Central in St. Clairsville, Union Local Middle School, Martins Ferry Schools.
America Recycles Day is in its 12th year and is observed on Nov. 15. However, since it arrives on a Sunday this year it is being observed on Nov. 14. The day is dedicated to encouraging Americans to recycle and buy recycled products. The 2009 theme is “It all comes back to you”
