STEUBENVILLE - The Jefferson-Belmont Regional Solid Waste Authority will sponsor an E-Cycling collection event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Fort Steuben Mall.
According to Tom Bottorf, interim executive director of the solid waste authority, it is the second year in a row the e-cycling collection will be held at the mall.
"This is an chance for Jefferson County residents to get rid of electronic items and not send the materials to a landfill," said Bottorf.
"Many electronic items contain copper and lead, which can add to pollutants in a landfill. This is also a chance for recyclers to reclaim various materials from the electronic devices. This e-cycling event, like the one we held last week in St. Clairsville, is limited to residents of Jefferson and Belmont counties. And we will be checking proof of residency at the collection site," explained Bottorf.
The collection will take place in the Fort Steuben Mall parking lot near the Sears Auto and Tire building.
According to Bottorf, the list of acceptable materials that can be dropped off Saturday for e-cycling include hard drives, mainframe servers, keyboards, cell phones, telephones, power cords, fax machines, printers, CDs and floppy discs, UPS batteries, car batteries and cell phone batteries.
"We will also be collecting laptop computers, monitors, microwaves, VCRs and DVD players, cable boxes, electric motors and docking stations. We will also be accepting flat screen televisions and regular televisions, but there will be a charge for very large and big screen televisions," said Bottorf.
"Computer hard drives left in a recycled computer will be destroyed," noted Bottorf
"We will not accept copy machines or appliances at this event," stressed Bottorf.
"All of the electronic items will be refurbished or recycled. All computer hard drives will be thoroughly destroyed to remove any confidential information. If anyone has any questions about our e-cycling program, they can contact the Keep Jefferson County Beautiful office at (740) 283-8614," Bottorf added.
