WINTERSVILLE - A dump off Powells Lane was cleaned up using a $1,000 grant from the Jefferson-Belmont Solid Waste Authority.
Brandon Andresen, Jefferson Soil and Water Conservation District water quality coordinator, said the location has been accumulating tires, couches and other debris for years.
Andresen said he was asked by Jefferson County Commissioner Thomas Graham to apply for the grant through the solid waste authority.
Graham said he has been receiving complaints for years about the dump site. He noted there wasn't county money available to clean up the site so he had Andresen obtain the grant.
Wells West End Excavating Inc. was selected as the contractor for the work.
Andresen said one truckload of tires was removed and a couple truckloads of couches, mattresses and construction debris were taken to landfills. Mulch then was placed over the area, he said.
"It is just our way to help clean up the county," Andresen said.
Graham, who recently went to the site to view the cleanup effort, said, "I'm sure the residents are happy now that it is completed."
